Field Notes

You’ll learn how to:
- Overcome perfectionism that keeps you stuck
- Build clarity through small, consistent action
- Redefine success as progress, not perfection.

Have you ever held back from doing something you know you
wanted to do because you were waiting until everything felt
perfect? What if I told you that perfect
is actually a trap, a dream that keeps you paused, watching
everyone else move while you still stay still?
In less than 30 minutes we are going to unpack, while waiting
until you're ready actually means you might never start.
And why? The magic, the clarity, the
momentum, it all comes when you move, even when the conditions
aren't ideal. If you've ever thought I'll wait
until the gear is greased, the engine warmed, the map drawn,
then this one's for you. Hey, Refined 1, welcome back to
the Morning Care with Danny. And I'm Danny, your Gen.
Z educator here to transform your identity by refining your
mentality. And this is the space where Gen.
Z Nigerians, creators, hustlers, thinkers, dreamers come to shift
their mindset and rewire their sense of self, their self-image,
and build motion toward a better version of themself.
And I'm your host, the Gen. Z educator, and I'm glad you're
here. Today we're tackling something
many of us feel but rarely admit.
The belief that you must be ready before you begin.
That everything must line up before you take the first step.
That the mic must be golden, the studio must be perfect, The
launch must be flawless. But what if that's backwards?
What if that's backwards? What if action comes first and
clarity, confidence, growth follow?
In this episode, I'll share my own story of how the morning
year began in a WhatsApp status, how I record on my phone, messed
up the audio, thought I shouldn't publish, and what
happened instead when I did it. I also pull in some mindset
psychology. Why start before being ready is
more powerful than waiting for perfect moment.
What happens to your brain when you delay?
Practical steps that you can use right now to begin.
Imperfect on ready but moving. So stay with me.
By the end of this episode, you will have the permission to
start to move, to engage and to let clarity chase after you.
So yes, what's in for you? You get clarity, you build
courage and you gain confidence not as a result of waiting, but
as a result of doing cause clarity comes with action.
So if you're a student juggling deadlines in Lagos and Abuja and
Rivers Stadium, and I'm Brian Delta or a creator on a tight
budget, a young professional trying to figure out the next
move, this episode matters because the war doesn't wait for
you to be ready. The opportunity, the idea, this
day in your heart, it calls you now.
And if you keep waiting for the perfect time, you might miss
your moment. Let's dive in.
If it treats me, how many of us say I can't launch my course
until the camera is better? I can't go live until I've got
the 10,000 followers. I can't start the podcast until
I've gotten the mic right or the right mic, the right room, the
right editing software. And I'm like, when do we start
redefining starting? When did we redefine starting as
having everything lined up, as having everything figured out?
Working the day I started this podcast in my own WhatsApp
status. Yup, he heard me right.
I recorded voice notes and uploaded them to my status.
Initially, yeah, it was trash. I thought the audio was trash,
right? Well, the weird thing is that
people still listened and learned and said this actually
spoke to me. Yet I nearly heard back.
I was thinking, let me let me wait till I get a better mic
until I get the audio right. Until I I hire someone who can
curate my artwork. That was what thinking
perfectionism, comparison culture all around into one.
But here's the truth. The gear doesn't make the
movement. The movement makes the gear
better. You don't get clarity before you
act. You get clarity B Pause.
You act. And every time you wait because
you're not ready, you're giving fear permission to slow you
down. Every time you wait because you
are not ready, in quote, you give fear permission to slow you
down. Let me take you back to how the
morning gear actually begun. The name, the morning gear came
to me over like 3 years ago. So I thought morning a fresh
start, a new era, a new life. Then gear means movement, that
talk, a mechanism. I imagined me as the primary
care and you the listener, as the secondary care.
I push, you turn, I've got the engine and you take the spin.
That's the whole metaphor behind the name.
But even with that clear vision, I didn't wait until the gear
looked perfect. Yeah, I had my moment of
starting, stopping, starting stopping, but I keep, I still
kept moving and it only gets better.
It only gets better. I recorded voice note on
WhatsApp, on my phone, uploaded into my status.
I listened, I stopped, I restarted, I told people, you
know, this is the first WhatsApp podcast you're ever listening to
'cause I'm the first WhatsApp podcaster you've ever met in
your whole life. That's a thrill.
A lot of people now take me as a first if WhatsApp podcasting was
actually a thing. But then it was a thing for me,
'cause I wanted to grow, right? Then during the process, I found
out that I could actually record the podcast using my phone.
I was happy, excited, enthusiastic, right?
I could record a podcast with just my phone.
That's it. No expensive setup, no perfect
studio. Just me and my idea and that
willingness to show up. And first word now I'm still
recording on my phone, but now the audio is better, the clarity
is higher, the reach, the reach is wider. 9 countries around the
world. Listen to the Morning Gear
podcast. Can you imagine something that
started in my WhatsApp status? Now I have listeners from across
nine countries in the world. That number never existed when I
waited. That number never existed when I
waited. Waiting wouldn't give me reach.
Action did. So if you're feeling like you're
not ready, it might not work out.
We won't have that all figured out.
What if it works out? No, it was what if, let's let me
ask you look at it from a different perspective.
What if it works out because it's all it always works out.
It only gets better. It only gets better.
You go to apps like Facebook, like LinkedIn, like Instagram,
like WhatsApp. Do you know why they have
frequent updates? It's because clarity comes with
action. Three years ago, there was
nothing like Reels, Reels on on Facebook.
There was nothing like that on Facebook.
But today you have Reels on Facebook, you have Facebook
Marketplace, you have met AI, they are developing.
Nobody would have thought of this.
You'd they would have not come to the extent of developing to
this point if they had never started.
You see why they see clarity comes to action.
Today I'm thinking about running my organic ad campaign.
And will I be here thinking about running an organic ad
campaign if I had not started this in the first place?
No Will it be easy? No, you wouldn't.
But then clarity comes with action.
If you feel you want to make an impact, if you feel you have
this drive to do something, you feel you can make a difference,
then stop eating for the right time or when you have
everything. Does this guy know I've been
following on Instagram and she records with her phone next
video with her phone, an Android phone which she normally abuses
and yeah, gives other people Twitter ship and encourages
other people to start with what they have.
Fast forward to recently, few weeks ago, Flash Audio Banks was
giving out an iPhone 17 Pro Max to any content creator that
should make an entry video. Why?
He needed it and all. And she made an entry video and
she won it. In fact, immediately I saw her
video, I really knew that she was the one going to win.
Who was going to win that 'cause this girl was consistent, she
was giving value. It only gets better, better.
It only gets better. Clarity comes with action.
Don't we start before you listen, before you get greed or
something? You have to get good at it
before you get good at that thing.
You have to have previously been bad before you were bad.
You have to start. So why not start and see how far
you go? Yeah.
True truth. I want you to grab today.
Start with what you have. Your phone, your voice, your
story, your five friends who believe in you.
You don't need everything perfect.
You need one. Step 2.
Then as you go, mistakes will come.
I made a lot of mistakes, made a lot of mistakes.
But thanks to a friend or podcast star Guy Martins, who
was also a friend or who is also a friend who was kind of a tour
guide to mean the whole process. But then I made mistakes.
You will also make mistakes, but then it's fine.
Just understand that tastes fine.
Your audio will crack. Your first logo might not be
good. Your voice might wobble.
Each mistake is a signal. Fix me next time.
And when you fix me, you swap these mistakes.
You are improving. You are moving.
You are gaining clarity. 3 Progress builds clarity, not
perfection. Progress builds clarity, not
perfection. Progress builds clarity, not
perfection. Perfection is an illusion.
You cannot have it all perfect. Even perfection is not a
destination, it's a journey gonna join to perfection.
So why chase it as if it's a goal?
Why chase as if it's a medal you have to gain when it's something
you have to follow through a process you have to walk.
When you act, you learn what works.
You find your voice, you discover your audience, you
refine your gear. You you rediscover yourself.
For if you wait, you'll never get the feedback loop.
You'll never get better. You just stay static.
Think about your world. Social media pressure, TikTok,
highlight reels, everyone, everyone's got the perfect feed
and you compare. If you don't look like this, I
won't post. If my carrier, if my if my
camera isn't this, I won't record.
Meanwhile, your voice is waiting in the wings, your story never
told, your idea never launched. Chen XI, in Nigeria and even in
the world, you have creativity, you have resourcefulness, you
have community. Let that be the strength here.
Use the phone the way it is, use the voice the way it is.
Use whatever you got. Start messy that on shore.
Start messy. Start without direction.
Just start. It feels cliche to say this, but
then believe me is the truth. Just start.
Start something. Clarity comes with action and
you will not understand this until you start.
And I need you to understand me. Clarity comes with action.
Why not Act classy does not come and meet you.
It's just like you're driving the car now and it's raining and
there's a fog everywhere. Using your Z windshield to
create clear glass, you will not see through a far distance.
But as you keep moving, you keep seeing.
As you keep moving, it gets clearer.
You keep moving. That is how life is.
That is how clarity comes with action.
If you're not acting, nothing is coming.
You ain't going nowhere. And believe me, when you act, as
you continue moving, you're making what progress.
By this time next year, the morning game will not be.
We just listen as our online countries in the world.
In fact, last week Sunday I was I posted on my WhatsApp status
that the morning year was 70 days old with eight with
listeners from 8 countries in the world.
But then I checked recently this week, checked my analytics and I
found out that we added one more country which is Australia and
now we are 9. We have listeners from 9
different countries in the world.
This is how it would keep on getting better.
It always gets better. Please start.
Please start. Start, iterate, then build, then
scale, then give a mini checklist.
Pick one small small project you've been delaying because
you're not ready. Commit to a launch date that you
want to launch that project once to do that thing, publish it,
promote it, engage and record what you learn and everything.
After one week, ask yourself what worked, what didn't work?
What how can I improve? Take Step 2.
Take step three. Keep motion.
Remember, clarity comes with action, Clarity comes with
action. I must keep telling you this
till we rings in your head. Clarity comes with action.
Clarity comes true movement. And it only gets better.
If I'm on a journey, so Mountain Everest and I'm just sitting
here, how will I get there? But if I could not move in,
every little step counts, every little steps count.
That's when we see little drops of water makes a mighty ocean.
You are that ocean. But then if that little drops,
if you did not stop pointing that little drops, will any
ocean form at the end? No.
So you need to make that conscious effort of starting.
You know, you don't know, you don't know where to take you.
You have no limit, you have no idea how just starting can can
change your entire life. So please, just start.
Start Not by not by staying still and hoping your gear goes
from zero to hero without you pushing, but just start.
Don't wait for the right time. But what if that the right time
is now? Think about it.
So to recap, the idea that you must be ready before starting is
an illusion. The idea that you must be ready
before you start is an illusion. Waiting for perfection keeps you
frozen. Real growth, real clarity, real
momentum begin when you move. We illustrated this through the
morning guest story. Starting on the WhatsApp on a
phone with raw audio. No perfect setup.
They're moving through action, right?
And I'm telling you that by this time next year, the morning year
will not be here. Who knows, maybe we'll become a
globally recognized podcast. And I don't know if I've said
this, but we were ranked 70th position in the education
category of podcasts in Nigeria of recent.
I don't know maybe the mark the the ranking would have changed
for previously we ranked 70th position before the money get
existed. We're never the ranking that
only it only gets better. So the three takeaways start
with what you have then as you go, progress builds Clancy, not
perfection. And if you walk away with one
thing? Begin now.
Start now. Let your imperfect start become
your launchpad. Let your first step give you the
feedback you need. Let gears start turning now so
you become the person who doesn't wait for the perfect
time. You can create your own path and
redefine your ways. Thank you very much for tuning
or tuning into the Morning Air podcast.
And if this episode actually motivated you even to start
something, then if he touched you, then he can do the same for
another person, right? So I'm urging you to share this
to somebody, your friend, your cousin, your sibling, your
course mates, who whoever has been holding back because they
feel they're they're not ready. Let's give them the permission
they need to start. And for you, I want you to pick
one micro action today. One, one step, one launch, one
voice note, 1 post, one call, push the gear, get in track, get
in motion. And on our next episode, keep
your mind set in motion, keep your gear turning.
And remember, character comes when you move, not when you
wait.
